National Bike Week 2015

PALLS ON PEDALS

National Bike Week Event June 19th 2015
Mountain Biking for Beginners Course for Young Men in PALLS
Many of the men who engage with PALLS cycled a lot in their youth but have lost the habit. To celebrate National Bike Week 2015 PALLS encouraged these men to “get back on your bike” and have fun and exercise with a one day celebration of biking.
The event was a one day mountain bike training session in the bike trail in the Ballyhoura mountains. Funded by Limerick Smarter Travel, this event gave the men in PALLS an opportunity to get professional training in mountain biking skills so they can become more confident and technically better as a biker and again see cycling as not only a great way to get exercise and have fun, but also providing real opportunities for employment in the future
THE OUTCOMES

  • 7 young men who are clients of the Probation Services in Limerick City enjoyed a day mountain biking in the Ballyhoura mountains
  • A number of these men have also attended bike maintenance training in PALLS
  • 7 young men have availed of a mainstream mountain biking service which they would not normally use

The PALLS project was in a position to offer participants an opportunity to engage in an enjoyable event which promoted health and wellbeing and encouraged young men to enjoying biking again
